PokerStars has been operating since 2001 when it was launched in Costa Rica. The company has since been moved to the Isle of Man where there is a 0% corporate tax and they allow gaming companies to take US bets.

PokerStars is the most popular poker room on the internet, overtaking Party Poker when they stopped taking players from the United States. Real money player numbers for PokerStars reach around 20,000 per day in ring games with thousands more playing in tournaments and play money games. At peak times it isn't unusual for 120,000 plus players to be online simultaneously.

PokerStars is also popular for its large variety of games (Texas Hold'em, Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, Stud, Stud Hi/Lo, RAZZ, 5-card draw, 2-7 triple draw) and regular tournaments with large prizes. Sunday Million is a weekly tournament which has a $1.5 million prize pool up for grabs and a $215 buy in. It is a new weekly tournament though that has proved to be the most popular, the Sunday Two Hundred Grand. With only a $11 buy-in it regularly attracts 25,000 players (the limit for the tournament) making it the most partipated tournament ever.

PokerStars is also popular amongst the pros with WSOP champs Joe Hachem, Chris Moneymaker and Greg Raymer spokespeople for the poker room. The latter two having made it to the WSOP through PokerStars competitions in the first place. PokerStars also has a large stable of quality pro poker players in its Team PokerStars which play regularly on the site.
